Frequently asked questions

Do I need internet to use Tablo?

Yes. You do need internet access to use Tablo. Like many modern gadgets, Tablo is a network-connected device, designed to have consistent high-speed internet access and will not function without it.

What devices can I use to set up my Tablo?

To set up your Tablo you’ll need an iOS or Android smartphone or tablet.

What smart devices are compatible with Tablo for viewing and managing live TV and recordings?

Tablo is compatible with streaming devices (sticks and boxes) and smart TVs from Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV, Android TV/Google TV, Samsung Tizen and LG webOS as well as smartphones and tablets running iOS and Android.

Does Tablo require a subscription?

No. There are no subscriptions, contracts, or hidden fees with Tablo whatsoever. Programming from your TV antenna as well as the 70+ included internet-based streaming channels are absolutely free and there is no cost to enjoy any Tablo apps, features, or guide data.

What hard drives are compatible with Tablo if I want to increase recording storage capacity?

Tablo devices come with up to 50 hours of onboard HD storage. However, you can choose to connect a portable USB hard drive (USB 2.0 or 3.0) between 1TB and 8TB in size for up to 1000 hours of additional storage capacity. See the Tablo Support Portal for details and recommendations.

Can I watch or record cable/satellite or streaming services with Tablo?

No. Tablo is designed to stream and record broadcast TV from antennas as well as included free TV streaming channels. It does not support viewing or recording from streaming services like Netflix for Sling, or cable or satellite channels like ESPN or HGTV.

Does the 4th generation Tablo support ATSC 3.0 (aka NextGenTV)?

No. The tuners in the 4th generation Tablo support the ATSC 1.0 broadcast standard used by all major commercial broadcasts today and the Tablo device takes full advantage of it like never before. While ATSC 3.0 broadcasts are available in some markets, ATSC 1.0 broadcasts will continue through at least June 2027.

What are Tablo’s shipping and return policies?

Shipping is always free to residents of the United States. And while we hope you love your Tablo, if you’re unhappy for any reason we offer a 30-day money-back guarantee. Customers must pay for return shipping. See our store policies page for details.

5 star Rating forTablo 4 and 3 star rating when used with Roku Ultra (4850x)

Now that I have had the Tablo4 for several weeks and have easily moved up the learning curve, I find the device well thought out. I can certainly recommend it.
Since I rely on closed captioning, I made an investment in a Roku Ultra (4850x) to provide closed captioning for over the air broadcasts. This makes my overall experience less positive because of the combination of Tablo and Roku devices. The 4850x freezes often during playback of recorded shows on the Tablo after advancing through commercials or part of the show.
Running the Tablo4 via wifi to the smart TV never shows this failure; BUT, I then cannot get the closed captioning on the ota shows. The only difference in the hookups are:

1. TABLO > smart TV via wifi (Tablo app 2.2.54 on smart TV from Tablo)
2. TABLO > 4850x via wifi (Tablo app 2.2.54 from Roku Store) > smart TV (via Ethernet cable). 4850x is powered on an AC strip not USB. TV, Tablo and Roku are 1 foot from each other. The router is 20 feet away. Roku reports signal as ‘excellent’.

The Tablo apps on the TV and the Roku show the same firmware version (2.2.54), although the Tablo app from the Roku Store shows a slightly different menu. The 4850x firmware is level 14.1.4 which is more recent than the level 12.5 which supposedly corrected this freeze problem. My thoughts lead to the fact that Roku’s command interface must be poorly done because the Tablo firmware behind it is the same in either test case.

So, I give 100% to Tablo and 50% to Roku. But, overall user experience will be affected by the Roku performance and will therefore reflect on Tablo. I hypothesis that Roku firmware is a patched software quilt never fully tested. I’ll be watching for a newer Tablo product that does provide closed captioning, likely via an ethernet connection since the Tizen OS is the difficulty for ota closed captioning.

Like it!

Difficult to find something that will record over the air programs. This works well, is small and looks nice.

It's all about the antenna

I've spent a ridiculous amount of time configuring the Tablo but I will admit once the antenna is in place to receive a strong signal this is a great system

OK BUT NEEDS WORK

I bought this to get our local broadcast channels over the air since that is what we mostly used Youtube Tv for and wanted to save the $82/mo fee. I placed an OTA indoor antenna in our window to make sure I could pickup our local channels and was able to get all the channels fine. Then I hooked the Tablo up to it and plugged it into my home network device. The app almost never loads correctly (tried on all 4 tvs) unless I hit the the back button on the tv remote then it loads but very slow. It does work but needs some improved software IMO. I've installed it on a firestick, google chrome still very slow to load or change channels.

Tablown Away

We love it! Works as good if not better than my last providers DVR. I have a wall mounted OTA antenna outside that works wonderfully with the Tablo.
My only complaint would be scrolling through the Live TV list of channels. It doesn’t respond well with the Firestick remote. It hesitates and responds poorly. I’ve been using the live fingernail display instead…
Good product if you’re within close proximity to a major city…
